Italy is of course the country that invented the pizza – although Naples was the originator for this world famous dish, Milan like the rest of Italy has plenty of pizza to go around! It makes for an inexpensive meal while out and about; we’ve picked some of our favourite pizzerias to share with you.
Pizzeria De Pino is located in the Greco area of the city and serves excellent lasagne as well as excellent pizza! Similarly to some of the other pizzerias in the area you can usually sample their homemade Mirto (a liqueur distilled from berries) too. There are quite a few pizzerias located in this area. Another is Pizzeria De Bassie where the homemade pizzas are very good and reasonably priced.
Pizza Fashion is a good choice if you are in a hurry to catch a train – the food is good, prices are reasonable, and you can get your dessert to go!
Pizzeria Da Giuliano – This cosy little restaurant has a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere to go with the humungous slices of pizza. Pick whatever toppings you like then await your masterpiece. They use lashings of mozzarella and a wood-burning stove.
Premiata Pizzeria has several branches dotted around the city, its rustic setting provides a cosy atmosphere and while you wait for your pizza (or pasta) to arrive, you can sample the complimentary meatballs! Not too many though, you’ll spoil your appetite…Popular with locals and visitors alike, the Premiata Pizzeria sometimes has diners queuing for a table, so get there early!
We definitely recommend you eat in the Pizzerias where the Milanese locals eat and try to avoid the tourist heavy areas – you really will benefit from a much better quality of food and without the inflated prices. However, don’t forget your Italian phrase book, as not all of these establishments will have English-speaking staff. You know what they say – When in Milan…! |
