Education in Italy compares reasonably well with other countries, however recent high profile stories about the education system will undoubtedly have created concern and worry. The Italian government is currently reforming the system as training standards and management were found to be inadequate. This has created greater interest in the numerous international schools in Milan. These schools promote an international curriculum such as the International Baccalaureate or curriculum different from the Italian national curriculum.
The International School of Milan has been providing a challenging international curriculum since 1958 and offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) and has done for several years. The school collaborates with 1,922 schools in 124 countries encouraging students to become well-rounded, independent, engaged world citizens. Three programmes are on offer to prospective students; the Primary Years Programme from Kindergarten to grade 6, the Middle Years Programme from grade 7 to grade 11 and then the Diploma Programme in grades 12 and 13. The main International School of Milan facilities are located in the west of Milan with a Primary School section situated in Monza. The complex consists of a wide range of modern science laboratories, libraries, computer centres, art workshops, music studios, gymnasiums and sports fields.
The Bilingual European School of Milan (BES) is in its tenth year of formation and is a natural continuation of the British American pre-school system. With the school intake increasing to just under 300 students the BES of Milan has recently introduced a Middle School. Contemporary learning services include a well equipped up-to-date computer room, library, gym and science laboratory. Classrooms are spacious and well supplied with resources while a garden and playground allow for out door pursuits. The school is fully accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education and is an International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) Primary Years Programme (PYP) candidate school.
The American School of Milan has been an IB World School since 1983 and offers the IB Middle Years Programme and IB Diploma Programme.
